Trees
03:06
|
|||
Thirty feet wide, and a hundred miles long
Straight as a knife, clear-cut down to the grass
On either side, the forest stretches for days
I’m used to the woods, getting lost on the trails
Nothing in nature makes lines so straight and clear
Impossible, but still real, and beautiful in your way
I could wander for a lifetime through these pines
Learning a path, then forgetting what I’ve learned
But now I can’t help but see for miles
By the swath that you burned
Through the trees
Once, it was just me in the woods of my mind
Choosing new directions on a whim
Now I can’t find a path to me that doesn’t cross you
Even when I try to lose myself
Somehow, we find the same North
Moving together, no matter what we do
When we get to the river, we both dive in
But you never learned to swim and I never could just float
So when the current starts to pull us apart
There’s nothing to do, unless one of us builds a boat
From these trees

What’s more artistic than a vision
Forever beyond the veil?
The mystery will always be
The more enchanting tale
If we are the sum of our stories
Then don’t get too close for too long
‘Cause once they learn all your progressions
They’ll stop listening to your song
What’s more heroic than striving
For a goal just out of reach?
You can hide your flaws with a noble cause
Once more unto the breach
If we are the sum of our stories
Then earn your “Once upon a time”
Give them a twist that they’ll never see coming
A narrative sublime
What’s more romantic than a lost love -
The one that got away?
A beautiful fable, if you’d only been able
To give them a reason to stay
If we are the sum of our stories
Then don’t hold happiness too dear
Because “Happily ever after’s”
The part that no one cares to hear

Double-Talk
05:09
|
|||
Talk-talking out both sides of your mouth
Talk-talking with righteous passion
Talk-talking about kicking people out
As if that white hood’s just a look, just a fashion
You’re just honoring your heritage
If you believe that we’re a Christian nation
Then say it loud: you don’t believe we’re all created equal
Talk-talking about responsibility
Talk-talking about those who take more than their share
Talk-talking about how we just don’t have the money
To pay for everybody’s care
And it’s such a shame, isn’t it?
If you believe that healthcare’s not a human right
Then say it proud: you believe the poor deserve to die
You’ve gotten very good at making it seem
Like the world works a certain way
And we’d all be happier if we let you lead us
Back to the good old days
Talk-talk-talk-talk about showing both sides
Talk-talk-talk-talk as if they’re equal
Talk-talk-talk-talk like if we get it wrong
We can just wait until the sequel
So why be hasty?
If you believe that science is a lie, then throw away your phone
Move out to Amish country and start baking pies
And someday we’ll set up buoys
To mark where the shoreline used to be
To make it harder for people like you
To lie about our history
If you ever said
What you really mean
You’d disgust yourself
Just like you disgust
Me

Drive, keep driving
Until not even the trees look the same
Walk, until I meet someone new
Hear an unfamiliar voice speak my name
Hello
Who are you?
We have so much in common
You don’t know who I am
Neither do I
Think, what part of me
Is not created from pieces of you
Replay the scenes that I don’t understand
Until I learn what you expect me to do
Hello
How are you?
How do you know?
How do you tell which
Feelings you feel?
I never know which way is up
Unless I’m fighting not to drown
And so I’ll stand here
With my eyes closed
And I will wait for it to rain

Might Makes Flight
04:33
|
|||
Is there one moment, when everything went south
And I lost the balance of my priorities
Some thought, some set of words, that when it left my mouth
It remade the universe of my possibilities
Am I so old
That my sun's gone cold
Let there be no confusion: I am no fool
I'm under no delusion that I'd get it right
It's just the sweet illusion that by making different mistakes
Somehow my life might take flight
And while I'm at it, what if I could start again
As the perfect girl I always wished to be
Cold fire and combat boots, all beyond the reach of men
Creating art that human eyes weren't meant to see
It's just a dream
Of worlds unseen
I need these dreams
Let there be no confusion: I am no fool
I'm under no delusion that I'd get it right
It's just the sweet illusion that by making different mistakes
Somehow my life might take flight

Find Our Rest
04:36
|
|||
Keep your head down
Keep the edges rough
Always get stronger
Never strong enough
Stay clear of distractions
Work alone
Keep your focus
Keen and honed
We’ll never find our rest, oh no
Though we gave it our best, and although
We made a hell of a mess, you know
We’ll pick it up before we go
Say I can’t, then
Call myself a liar
All of these doubts, just
Fuel for the fire
I’m spiraling outward
Some kind of a curse
Every day gets better
Every night gets worse
We’ll never find our rest, oh no
Though we gave it our best, and although
We made a hell of a mess, you know
We’ll pick it up before we go
Cherish the victories
Remember to smile
Feel like you won one
Once in a while
Sleep like you mean it
Wake up real sore
Work ‘til you can’t, then
Work more
We’ll never find our rest, oh no
Though we gave it our best, and although
We made a hell of a mess, you know
We’ll pick it up before we go

Legacy
07:27
|
|||
I know the reason why you look to the sky
Our each and every cell
The atoms that we know so well
Were made inside exploding suns
We’re all just ash, from fires long gone
And all we make with pride and small uncertain hand
Mean no more to the tide than any grain of sand
